Il palazzo, collocato nei pressi di Porta Treviso, venne commissionato dalle famiglie Severino e Malatesta (signori di Cittadella) tra la fine del Quattrocento e gli inizi del Cinquecento, come residenza signorile. Sede dei podestà inviati prima dal Comune di Padova e poi dalla Repubblica di Venezia, l’edificio è caratterizzato da una ricca decorazione ad affresco a finta tappezzeria con bande verticali, fregi policromi, tondi e medaglioni; particolare anche il portale d’ingresso in marmo rosa di Verona, recante un rilievo con il Leone marciano e due medaglioni con le effigi di Pandolfo Malatesta e del fratello Carlo, signori di Cittadella.

Il palazzo, che durante la dominazione austro- ungarica fu sede delle carceri, è stato recentemente restaurato e ospita oggi la Fondazione Pretorio Onlus, la quale organizza al piano nobile mostre temporanee di opere d’arte moderna e contemporanea di carattere nazionale.

Praetorian Palace

The Palace, located near Porta Treviso, was commissioned by the Severino and Malatesta (lords of Cittadella) families between the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth century as a stately residence. Headquarters of the podestà, sent initially by the municipality of Padua and then by the Republic of Venice, the Palace presents a rich mock tapestry fresco decoration with vertical bands, polychrome friezes, tondos, and medallions. Also, the entrance portal in pink marble from Verona is noteworthy; it carries a relief with the Lion of St. Mark and two medals with the effigies of Pandolfo Malatesta and his brother Charles, lords of Cittadella. The Palace, which during the Austro-Hungarian domination held the prison, has been recently restored and currently houses the Pretorio Onlus Foundation, which, on the noble floor, organizes temporary exhibits of national modern and contemporary art.
